The varsity football team at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School almost had an undefeated regular football season. Almost. The Eagles lost to the Plantation High Colonels last week 39-10.

However, the team won its first eight games of the season and is still going to the playoffs this week. The first game, against Miami High, kicks off at 7:30 at Cumber Stadium in Parkland.

In a surprise move, the NCAA says it intends to allow college athletes to earn compensation — but it says it's only starting to work out the details of how that would take place. The organization's board of governors said Tuesday that it had voted unanimously to permit student-athletes to benefit from the use of their name, image and likeness.

Top-tier black college athletes should take their talents to historically black institutions. That's the argument that Jemele Hill is making in a new piece for The Atlantic. She says that doing so could benefit both the colleges and the communities around them.

What kind of heart check-up do young athletes need to make the team? A large study of teenage soccer players in England found in-depth screening didn't detect signs of trouble in some athletes who later died — yet allowed others at risk to get treated and back in the game.

Holly Neher is (unofficially) the first female in Florida history to start at quarterback on a high school football team. It's only unofficial because the Florida High School Athletic Association has not been able to confirm it.

In her first game in August, Neher threw a 42-yard touchdown pass, again a first in Florida high school sports.

If you're involved in high school athletics, you know the scene. There's increasing pressure to specialize in a single sport and play it year-round.
