Turns out Kathy Ann Paul – aka Sweet Hand Kathy – is as capable a DJ as she is a baker.

Right now, when you walk into her Miami Gardens restaurant – called, of course, Sweet Hand Kathy – you’re likely to be regaled with “parang,” a festive blend of music like Trinidadian calypso and Venezuelan gaita. That’s because parang season means Christmas season in Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean island country where Paul grew up.

The island nation of Trinidad and Tobago boasts one of the world's largest carnivals. Dating back to 1783, the pre-Lenten celebration blends French, African and Indian cultures, all leading up to two days of masquerading, also called “playing mas.”

And unlike its South American counterpart in Brazil, anyone can take to the streets in a glitzy, colorful costume, dancing through Port of Spain to the sounds of sweet soca music.

More than a dozen people have been indicted in the U.S. investigation into corruption at international soccer’s governing body, FIFA. But one former FIFA leader with South Florida connections is emerging as the scandal’s poster boy.

Jack Warner is a former FIFA vice president and a member of parliament in Trinidad and Tobago. And if mounting allegations against him in the FIFA corruption scandal are true, he’s also destined to be called one of the most corrupt men in the Caribbean.
