Record-shattering cold, heavy snow and howling winds are descending on a broad swath of the U.S., the National Weather Service says. It's the result of one of the coldest arctic air masses to hit the country in recent memory, the agency says, forecasting bitter conditions in areas from the Upper Midwest to many Eastern states.

Warning of a "very dangerous and life-threatening arctic blast," the weather service predicts that the next several days could see "widespread record lows and low maximum temperatures from the Upper Midwest to the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley."

The storm system that produced severe thunderstorms across portions of Florida Thursday has a mean back side that will sweep across the state Friday. High winds, dangerous surf, and coastal flooding are possible along all coastlines of the Sunshine State, and gusty winds might also cause minor wind damage in some inland locations.

Thursday Afternoon Update

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for much of southeast Florida, including Miami and West Palm Beach, until 9 pm. This replaces the Tornado Watch that was issued for central and southwest Florida earlier in the day.  The risk of wind damage will continue through early evening in the watch area, thanks to an approaching line of thunderstorms.
