U.S. Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Miami, is seeking to chair the House Homeland Security Committee, POLITICO reported Wednesday.
POLITICO reported that it obtained a letter of intent authored by Gimenez and sent to the Steering Committee of his intent to run. His congressional office confirmed to POLITICO his interest in the position.
The current House Homeland Security Committee chair, U.S. Rep. Mark Green, of Tennessee, is leaving the post because he is resigning from Congress.
Gimenez, who is former mayor of Miami-Dade County and former city manager of Miami, talks about his experience in government to sell his congressional colleagues on why he should be chair.
“These roles were not theoretical, they were boots-on-the-ground, real world experiences,” he wrote.
