A Miami Mayoral candidate is suing the city over its recent decision to move elections to even years, so that they line up with state and federal elections.

Emilio Gonzalez’s attorneys have filed a lawsuit challenging the city commission’s decision June 24. Supporters say the switch-up will hopefully boost voter turnout.

This year’s scheduled November election will now be moved to 2026, which means elected officials who are set to leave office this year will get an extra year in office.

The complaint argues that the commission’s decision violates Florida law and calls for an injunction to halt the ordinance.
