Florida Republicans have proposed several property tax cuts to ease costs for homeowners.
But at a luncheon hosted by the nonprofit League of Women Voters, Representative and former Wellington Mayor Anne Gerwig told WLRN she’s concerned the tax-cut plans could weaken the Save Our Homes cap, which limits property value hikes to 3% a year.
" I also understand the services that are provided from those taxes. Being a local mayor and a local elected, I know what those monies go towards, and that's important services for our community. So we gotta protect that," Gerwig said.
Homeowners have faced big jumps in home insurance premiums of up to 40% this year, making Florida’s market among the nation’s most volatile. Democratic State Sen. Lori Berman is urging the GOP-led state legislature to focus on property insurance issues over property taxes.
"If you lower property taxes, people lose services. If you lower property insurance, people get money in their pockets, and that's what we want," Berman said.
Florida’s 2026 legislative session begins Jan. 13.
