Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle holds a sketch and photo of the teenager arrested for the murder of Rabbi Joseph Raksin during a press conference on Dec. 9, 2015.

A South Florida teen filed a lawsuit in Miami-Dade County against the Miami-Dade police department. In 2014 Rabbi Joseph Raksin was gunned down near a Synagogue in Northeast Miami-Dade County. Sixteen months after the shooting, Miami police charged Deandre Charles, who was a minor at the time and he spent a year behind bars. Earlier this week, Charles filed a lawsuit claiming that authorities jailed him despite of having evidence proving he could be innocent. David Ovalle, reporter for Miami Herald is following the story and joined Sundial to talk about the details.

Ovalle also talked about the impacts the partial federal shutdown is having on immigration hearings in South Florida. The partial federal government shutdown is impacting people who are waiting for a hearing at immigration courts in Miami. Ovalle reports there are not enough resources and immigration courts are struggling with a massive backlog of over 60 court cases in Florida. In some cases, those who had appointments scheduled in immigration court during the federal shutdown will have to wait another three years for their cases to be heard.
