WLRN’s Journey to the Macy’s Parade TV documentary took the Best Content Production award at the National Educational Telecommunications Association Awards Monday, earning a “perfect score” from judges.
Team members Mia Laurenzo, Jamie March and Alan Tomlinson were honored with the award in the Television Documentary Category at the NETA annual awards ceremony, held in Tampa.
The NETA Awards are an annual recognition of member-produced excellence in public broadcasting. The professional organization was established in 1997 to serve public television licensees and affiliated educational organizations, and has members in 43 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Journey to the Macy’s Parade follows the adventure of Florida’s Tarpon Springs Marching Band in an uplifting and exclusive behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to be a part of one of the largest events of the year. It tells the story of the band, one of only 10 marching bands chosen to perform in the parade, from practice to performance at their biggest event yet. Each year, thousands of parade participants take to the streets of Manhattan to trek 2.5 miles in front of 3 million spectators and 50 million television viewers.
Journey to the Macy’s Parade is scheduled to air on PBS stations across the country on Nov. 7, in time for the Thanksgiving holidays.
