FORT LAUDERDALE — Karen Dietrich is stepping down as interim chief of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department after six months in the role, effectively taking herself out of the running to be the agency’s top cop.
Her decision comes just days after an announcement by City Manager Chris Lagerbloom that he plans to hire a new interim chief not interested in running the department on a more permanent basis.
Lagerbloom says he’s heard of several would-be applicants who declined to apply out of respect for Dietrich. Dietrich, who could not be reached for comment Monday night, came up through the ranks after joining the agency 30 years ago.
