  • NPR's Jim Zarroli reports that American Airlines made it official today. It will acquire financially-troubled TWA. In a separate deal, American also announced that it is buying some of US Airways assets and will take a major stake in a startup airline, DC Air. American's parent corporation, AMR, gets TWA's 190 planes and 175 gates at airports around the country. American has also agreed to provide employment to almost all of TWA's 20,000 employees.
  • NPR's Jim Zarroli reports American Airlines is in talks to acquire Trans World Airlines, as part of a complex deal in which American would also agree to buy significant assets from US Airways. No deal is certain and the talks may still fall apart. TWA is the nation's eighth-largest airline. It has struggled for years and would have to file bankruptcy for a third time before any deal could go forward.
  • International Coal Group owns the Sago mine where 13 miners are trapped. ICG is a relatively new company that was formed in May 2004 and acquired the assets of several bankrupt coal companies. In the months since then, U.S. officials say the number of safety violations at the company's mines has risen.
  • Cable giant Comcast faces obstacles in its quest to acquire the Walt Disney Co. Analysts say Comcast will likely need to increase its bid to convince Disney shareholders to sell the company. If that happens, Comcast will have to ease consumer concerns over media consolidation and persuade federal regulators that the takeover won't inhibit competition. NPR's Jim Zarroli reports.
  • Microsoft has plenty of reasons to want to acquire online giant Yahoo — 80 billion reasons, in fact. Online ad revenues are expected to double by 2010, reaching $80 billion, and Microsoft is eager to get into the game — if for no other reason than to slow rival Google's historic growth.

  • Federated Department Stores plans to acquire May Department Stores for more than $11 billion in cash and stock. Federated owns Macy's and Bloomingdale's among other retail chains.
