All fraternities and sororities at Florida State University have been suspended indefinitely after the death of 20-year old Alex Coffey at a fraternity event. FSU John Thrasher made the announcement earlier this week.
"This pause is needed to review and reflect on the loss of a young life and to implement serious changes," Thrasher said. "For this suspension to end, there will need to be a new normal for Greek life on campus. They must participate in that culture."Authorities are investigating.
El Nuevo Herald hired Nancy San Martin as the new managing editor for the newspaper. San Martin’s journalistic career spans four decades, reporting stories worldwide, from places like Afghanistan, Haiti and all over South Florida. She is a two-time winner as producer of two PBS documentaries. She will oversee day-to-day operations of El Nuevo Herald and is responsible for growing the paper’s digital presence.
“I am honored to be part of the continuing evolution of our industry, and I am extremely excited to work alongside tremendously talented journalists,” San Martín said. “Together, we will surely carve out new paths in the digital landscape.”
Uli Shackman returns to the Florida Keys victorious, after biking more than 5,000 miles from Anchorage, Alaska to Key West to find a cure for HIV/AIDS. Her vision is to find a cure for the disease by 2020.
Shackman began her odyssey late May this year in Alaska. Accompanied by her canine companion, Jackson, a 7-year-old Havanese pooch, she journeyed through the Alaskan tundra battling cold weather, hip-deep snow and close encounters with grizzly bears, moose, and other large game.
Shackman finished her cross-country expedition late October which took her almost six months to complete. Shackman documented her journey on her blog, www.ulisjourney.com, where supporters sent donations to her cause and shared motivational stories. Shackman plans to cover her path again, this time on car to reconnect with the many people she met along her way. Also, she is in the process of writing a book about her story.
