Miami-Dade Expressway Authority Controversy, New Dinosaur Discovery & Biodegradable Six-Pack Rings

Miami Herald

Efforts in both Miami-Dade County and Tallahassee are seeking to put an end the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX). MDX was created in 1994 by the Miami-Dade County Commission and is a user-funded transportation agency whose purpose is to improve mobility. Politicians and residents are debating whether the state or county should keep the money that MDX collects via tolls, and others have suggested creating a new authority. Miami Herald reporter Doug Hanks has been following the story and joined us to explain this ongoing transportation battle and what it means for commuters.

Roughly 66 million years ago, an asteroid struck the Earth causing dinosaurs -- and 75% of all species -- to become extinct. For many years, the theory of the asteroid strike was highly contested. But a new discovery from Palm Beach Paleontologist Robert DePalma may help to reveal the true magnitude of the asteroid strike. Florida International University (FIU) professor and sedimentologist Florentin Maurrasse studied the DePalma’s sediment samples and has been researching asteroid strikes for decades. We spoke to him about the new findings.

Saltwater Brewery, based in Delray Beach, is innovating the beer industry in the form of their product packaging. Instead of using plastic six pack rings, which can be detrimental to marine organisms like turtles, fish, and seabirds, they have created completely edible and biodegradable six pack rings. We heard from the brewery’s Head of Operations and Co-Founder about the rings and the importance of environmental sustainability.

Watch how Saltwater Brewery's biodegradable six-pack rings get made.
