College Athletes Will Be Paid
The National Collegiate Athletic Association or NCAA, voted unanimously on Tuesday to start the process of allowing college athletes to make money on their names and likeness. In South Florida, House Democratic Leader Kionne McGhee, has pushed hard for this measure. Late last month, he proposed a bill (HB 251) that would allow players to apply for endorsement deals with major companies. McGhee talks with host Luis Hernandez about the NCAA’s decision.
Miami Dade College Interim President
After 50 years in the position, Miami Dade College’s former President Eduardo Padrón stepped down in August. Now taking his place as interim president is Rolando Montoya. Montoya has served in various capacities within the college since 1987, most recently as Vice Provost of Operations. Sundial spoke with Montoya last week at MDC about the search process and his goals while in office.
National Geographic Explorer Leads FIU Science Communication
National Geographic Cuban-American explorer Mireya Mayor returns to South Florida after more than 20 years of traveling around the world as a correspondent. She’s starting a new position at Florida International University as the director of exploration and science communication. In the position, she will be guiding professors in the college on how to to better communicate their science work. She joins Sundial to talk about her time with National Geographic and what she is looking forward to in the new position.
Anti-Defamation League Benefit Concert
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) of Florida launched a social media campaign this week called “No Place for Hate,” a call to action against hate. On Saturday, the South Florida Symphony is hosting a benefit concert for the ADL at the Greater Miami Temple Israel called, “In Concert Against Hate.” It will feature a variety of Jewish songs that combat bigotry and question authority. Dr. Alan Mason, the Director of Music Emeritus of the synagogue joins Sundial to discuss the song selections he picked for the concert.
