Heard On Sundial: COVID-19 Response, Cancelling Ultra Music Festival & Josh Fox's One-Man Show
On this Monday, March 9, episode of Sundial:
Rep. Ted Deutch talks about COVID-19 response
U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Ted Deutch held a roundtable on Monday morning at Nova Southeastern University to discuss the spread of the coronavirus or COVID-19, prevention techniques and possible impacts on South Florida.
Deutch says one of the challenges is testing kits: “No one can identify the number of tests available in Florida,” says Deutch. “That’s the first order of business for me.”
As of Monday morning, there are 13 people in the state of Florida that have tested positive for COVID-19. The Florida Department of Health has instituted an international travel advisory recommending "all individuals who have traveled internationally to self-isolate for 14 days following their date of return to the United States." Deutch joined Sundial to talk about the virus and his support of Vice President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination.
What Ultra Music Festival’s cancellation means for South Florida
The Ultra Music Festival brings many visitors from across the world to the city of Miami year after year. The festival is the first of several big events that have been called off in South Florida amid fears of the coronavirus or COVID-19.
Last week, Miami city leaders and Ultra organizers confirmed that the 2020 event is canceled. The three-day event was scheduled for March 20, however many travelers have taken to social media and said they are still coming.
The Miami Herald’s Joey Flechas has been covering the music fest and joined Sundial to discuss the impact of Ultra's cancellation, what other events could be impacted and how local officials are responding to the threat of COVID-19.
The Truth Has Changed at MDC Live Arts
Oscar-Nominated filmmaker and environmental activist Josh Fox, creator of Gasland, the documentary that explored the impact of fracking on communities nationwide, is in South Florida for a one-man show.
“The Truth Has Changed” explores the proliferation of misinformation, in particular by the oil and gas industry, and how that’s impacted the environmental movement at large.
"We're living in coastal cities and our days are numbered unless we take action," says Fox. "This show is about understanding the urgency."
Fox joined Sundial to talk about some of the critical environmental issues facing South Florida: sea level rise, reaching max development in the Keys and increasingly powerful hurricanes. The show will run until March 20 at MDC Live Arts Lab.
