A new study by the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School has found that global fish farming relies on larger quantities of wild-caught ocean fish than previously believed. “This demonstrates the scale at which aquaculture could be impacting marine ecosystems.”

The organizations say the federal agency failed to consider the impacts deep sea aquaculture would have on threatened and endangered species.

While a $100,000 grant is funding researchers to help Florida's shellfish aquaculture industry after the pandemic, it could also potentially give a financial boost through periods of toxic red tide blooms.
