The future of Miami-Dade’s transportation system was the topic of the 2015 Transportation Summit, held at the Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus Chapman Conference Center today.

County officials and residents gathered to pinpoint problems and brainstorm solutions.

Esmond Scott is director of public works in the City of North Miami Beach. Scott says the issue with the area’s transportation system is elementary. The infrastructure on which it was built has become obsolete because of population growth. Connecting communities to major roadways is an issue and the lack of public transportation only cripples the system.

“The infrastructure has to be revisited and there has to be an overall education of everyone in general as to how it is that we hurdle obstacles that we have,” says Scott.

Digno Caballero is chief operating officer of a tech startup. He says county commissioners should have neighborhood transportation plans.

“It’s not about big projects. Everything is solved with small things, small details,” says Caballero.

The event served as a platform to discuss the system and answer what needs to be done and how the community can get there.
