The grief and mourning continue for the 17 students and staff killed on the afternoon of Feb. 14 during a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. But something else is happening among the anguish of the interrupted lives of the victims and survivors. Out of the agony, activism has emerged and students from across South Florida are speaking out together asking for stricter gun controls. The South Florida community said goodbye to another beloved faculty member who died in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting on Feb. 14.

Chris Hixon, 49, was honored Wednesday morning as ‘Amazing Grace’ was played on the bagpipes outside of Nativity Catholic Church in Hollywood.

Teachers and staff of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, as well as Gov. Rick Scott and Hollywood City Commissioner Dick Blattner, came to honor Hixon.

But it was MSD students who came by the dozens, many wearing Eagles sports jerseys and state championship T-shirts to honor their coach.

Hixon was the athletic director at MSD. He also coached the wrestling team and was recently named the athletic director of the year for Broward County in 2017.

Stories from students emerged shortly after the shooting on Valentine’s Day, remembering Hixon as one of the heroes who tried to stop confessed-shooter Nikolas Cruz from firing his AR-15 inside the freshman class building. Seventeen students and faculty were killed during the incident.

Hixon was laid to rest with full military honors, as he served in the U.S. military during Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield.

After the funeral service, two charter buses full of MSD teachers and staff members drove to South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth for the burial.
