A handful of women who make up the "Off The Hook" crochet and knitting club in Pembroke Pines have been using their recent meetings to make scarves for military care packages.
Six women gathered Friday at their bi-monthly meeting at the Southwest Regional Library in Pembroke Pines — needles and fancy yarns in hand.
They worked on hand-made scarves to send to U.S. military members in time for Veterans Day on Monday.
"Yours is really, really soft," Melody Tuli told one of the club members.
Tuli is the library specialist and she helped form the club — as well as set up its participation this year with the organization Operation Gratitude.
"It's very close to heart because my father was a World War II veteran," Tuli said.

The women are participating in Operation Gratitude's 16-day red scarf challenge. The color red is an acronym to Remember Everyone Deployed, the website states. It's been done in the past for Military Appreciation Month in May; however the women in the club are doing the challenge to make sure that military service members and veterans have something festive to open during the holiday season.
All of the scarves they crochet and knit will go into holiday care packages for deployed U.S. service members, veterans, wounded soldiers and their caregivers. The scarves will get to veterans and service members between now and New Year's.
Pembroke Pines resident Linda Fernandez used a seed-stitch pattern to knit a deep red-wine colored scarf to send.
"I enjoy doing this...I have lots of yarn and I like to occupy my time," Fernandez said. "It's nice to be able to think that something I'm making, I can actually send for someone that would actually appreciate it."
The Off The Hook club meets every second and fourth Friday of the month at 10:30 a.m. at the Southwest Regional Library in Pembroke Pines and also crafts projects for other charitable organizations.
