Two high-profile candidates are vying for Miami-Dade County’s District 1 commission seat: Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert and Sybrina Fulton, activist and mother of Trayvon Martin.
The City of Miami Gardens has also hosted massive events this year such as Rolling Loud Music Festival and the Miami Open tennis tournament. Mayor Gilbert joined Sundial to talk about the impact of hosting these events in his city, and what preparation they are making for the 2020 Super Bowl.
For almost two decades, Memorial Day Weekend on South Beach has featured hip-hop music, parties and high fashion. Urban Beach Week is a three-day festival popular among black visitors that takes place in the City of Miami Beach. This year a group of black artists has received a $100,000 grant from the city’s tourism department to curate a variety of artworks geared toward shining a positive light on the role black residents have played in shaping the city’s culture. Artist Octavia Yearwood and City of Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber joined Sundial to talk about the misrepresentation of black people in the media during Urban Beach Week.
Evan Snow, the co-founder of Art Fort Lauderdale, recently traveled to Venice, Italy as part of a cultural exchange. Ft. Lauderdale has a “sister city” or cultural exchange relationship with Venice and Snow was interested in building upon that. He’s started a program where artists in Ft. Lauderdale can travel to Venice and work in studios for a few months and vice versa. Snow joined Sundial to talk about the cultural similarities between Fort Lauderdale and Venice. He also discussed his new Zero Empty Spaces project, which will transform vacant buildings in Ft. Lauderdale into artist studio spaces.
