A new exhibit at The Studios of Key West combines paintings, textiles and artifacts to tell the story of African-American life — and how it has been part of every aspect of the country's history, in time and place.

The Fabric of Soul is the work of Avis Collins Robinson. She lives in Washington, D.C., and grew up in that area. But she has also lived in San Francisco, Argentina and England. An artist, dancer and seamstress, she took in the cultural influences from the different places she's lived.
She's also a collector, starting with artifacts passed down within her own family. Fabric of Soul includes a few pieces from her collection, including a cotton gin and a segregation-era water cooler from Biloxi, Mississippi.
The Fabric of Soul is on display at The Studios of Key West through May 25.
