Anna Karenina
Greta Garbo and Fredric March star in the 1935 romantic drama Anna Karenina.

Wednesday 8pm ANNA KARENINA (1948) Drama/romance starring Greta Garboand Fredric March. It's love at first sight when Anna meets the dashing officer, Col.Vronsky. She is married, with a son however and their love affair becomes fatally tragic.

Anna Karenina (Greta Garbo) is married to Alexei Karenin (Basil Rathbone), a cold government official in St Petersburg who is apparently more interested in his career than in satisfying the emotional needs of his wife. Though her marriage is not intolerable, Anna is swept off her feet by dashing young military officer Vronsky  (Fredric March)and deserts her family for an illicit affair.  Soon, society is whispering about their infedility and the ensuing scandal ruins Anna's status in society.

TRIVIA

  • David O. Selznick wanted Clark Gable to play Count Vronsky, but he wasn't interested.
  • Aware that her co-star Fredric March was notorious for seducing his leading ladies, Greta Garbo reportedly wore garlic under her clothes and purposely had bad breath in order to stave off his advances.
  • Because Greta Garbo refused to work at night, MGM was forced to build a stage over the St. Petersburg railroad station set on the back lot to simulate darkness.
