DeSantis Extends Ban On Evictions And Foreclosures Until June 2
Updated Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Renters expecting to be evicted on May 17 can relax ― at least for another two weeks.
At a news conference on Thursday, Gov. Ron DeSantis said he is extending a moratorium on evictions and foreclosures that he signed in an executive order on April 2. The extension ends on June 2, DeSantis said.
That order prevents landlords from filing eviction proceedings against tenants unable to pay their rent because of the coronavirus emergency. It also prevents lenders from filing to foreclose on homes.

DeSantis Approves Plans For Miami-Dade And Broward To Reopen Businesses On Monday
Updated Thursday at 1 p.m.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed off on plans for Miami-Dade and Broward counties to reopen restaurants and other businesses deemed non-essential, the governor announced Thursday at a press conference in Doral.
“Miami-Dade and Broward have both submitted plans that I’ve approved,” DeSantis said. “Today we take another important step for a very important part of the state of Florida.”
It was the latest effort by DeSantis to boost consumer spending in a state economy crippled by sweeping closure orders, people fearing for their health if they venture into businesses allowed to open, and the anxiety caused by a global slowdown that’s sparking permanent business closures across South Florida and around the world.

Statewide Coronavirus Cases Surpass 43,000
Updated Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
Florida surpassed 43,000 positive cases of COVID-19 as Florida’s Department of Health confirmed an additional 808 cases of COVID-19 on Thursday morning. Florida has a total of 43,210 confirmed cases.
Thursday's update also included the announcement of 48 new deaths, increasing the statewide number to 1,875. Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties make up 1,065 of those reported deaths. Monroe County has reported three deaths due to COVID-19.
