Today on Sundial we spoke with Democratic U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch of Broward about the details of the stimulus package and what workers here in South Florida can expect. He also explained what further steps the state of Florida can take to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
“What he (Gov. DeSantis) put out there still encourages people to stay home, it encourages them to take certain actions. It needs to be mandatory, people need to get the message they can’t leave their homes.”
Deutch held a teleconference over the weekend where he answered questions from his constituents about the coronavirus. He says if listeners have follow-up questions from today’s interview, they can post them on his Facebook page as well.
How the cruise industry is handling coronavirus
The cruise industry has been in the spotlight since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. There was the Diamond Princess of the coast of Japan with hundreds of sick passengers. Then the story of the Grand Princess attempting to dock in San Francisco with infected passengers on board. Now the issue has come to a head in South Florida. The Holland America Line Zaandam is looking to dock in Port Everglades with four dead passengers on board and at least on COVID-19 patient.
Taylor Dolven covers tourism for the Miami Herald. She explained the controversy surrounding the Zaandam ship and how the cruise industry in South Florida is dealing with the ongoing crisis.
