Water Main Break In East Fort Lauderdale Leads To Boil-Water Notice

Oct 3, 2019

The city of Fort Lauderdale issued a precautionary boil-water notice for the Las Olas Isles and Nurmi Isles neighborhoods late Thursday.

Precautionary notices are issued when there is a chance of bacteria entering the water system.

Workers began emergency repairs at a broken water main at Las Olas Boulevard and San Marco Drive. Repairs are expected to last three to four hours into Thursday night.

The notice was issued in consultation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. It will remain in effect until bacteriological surveys show that the water is safe to drink.

Until then, residents are encouraged to boil all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, and brushing teeth. Alternatlively, the notice suggests using bottled water.

The water main break comes over two months after a contractor for Florida Power & Light broke a critical water main in mid-July, near the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. The issue led to a local state of emergency, water shortage fears, and boil-water orders and notices for more than a week, in some parts of the Finger Isles.

The city's the 24-Hour Neighbor Call Center is available to answer resident questions at 954-828-8000.
