A Florida Department of Education spokesperson has said that allowing a transgender student to play on a girls' volleyball team in Broward County is against the law, and those responsible should face "serious consequences.”

It's been two and a half years since a roof collapsed at Rickards Middle School in Oakland Park and students, faculty and staff are still operating out of portable classrooms. Broward County school officials recently broke ground on a new school building, which is expected to be finished in 2026.

The school board, the union said, has offered no money out of their own budget for raises.

Broward County public school students went without a sexual education curriculum last year after the board failed to pass one.

The district has been pushing for their own law enforcement department to match Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties.

Cafeteria workers, maintenance technicians, bus drivers and police officers in Broward County Public Schools will soon see their pay increase by 5.5% — at least for the next four years. That's thanks to a tax referendum that voters approved in 2022 to invest in higher staff salaries, school safety and mental health resources.

The PROMISE program was hailed as a success following its inception in 2013, but came under scrutiny in 2018 after it was revealed that the gunman who killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School was referred to the program but did not complete it.

Tuesday's Broward school board vote on ending the PROMISE pre-arrest diversion program has some worried more Black and Latino children will be arrested.

All of South Florida's public school districts are now back in session. Broward County's new superintendent kicked off his tenure by touring schools across the district.

As a teacher told the board school board voted down a proposal by Board Member Allen Zeman, due to concerns over the budget cuts he proposed to fund the raises. Instead, the district's new superintendent will draft his own plan to increase pay.
