Here's What Not To Miss On Broward County's Arts Calendar

Cultural happenings are cropping up in full force this season in Broward County. The forthcoming arts calendar is brimming with so much to do and see you'd wish you were in two places at one time. 

We've compiled this series of events-- small and large, prestigious and homegrown--so you can plan ahead and not miss out on what intrigues you. From thought-provoking lectures with renowned artists to massive puppets on parade in downtown Fort Lauderdale, an array of cultural offerings exist in Broward County.

Fair warning: This list is by no means exhaustive, but rather, this event roundup composed in chronological order serves to showcase events in particular and special to the area. 

Free Ride, starring Anna Paquin, screens opening night at FLiFF

The 28th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLiFF)

FLiff kicks off Friday, October 18 at Cinema Paradiso-Fort Lauderdale with a screening of Free Ride, featuring cable TV star Anna Paquin of True Blood fame. The film's director Shana Betz, along with co-producer Stephen Moyer will be in attendance.

This four-week film festival boasts tons of screenings of indie foreign flicks and film premiers. In addition to watching films, attendees can join industry parties, meet actors like Lea Thompson, Ed Asner, Tab Hunter as well as attend glitzy galas.

The festival wraps up on Monday, November 11.

Tracing The Imaginary, 1310 Gallery Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts Saturday

Opening on Saturday, Oct. 19, this exhibition comprises works by mother and daughter artists, Sonia and Francisca Hernandez. Imaginary gardens, symbolism and fragmentation of multiple spaces serve as subjects in this collection of two-dimensional pieces, installation art and found-object assemblages.

Artist Lectures And Workshops at North Regional Library/Broward College North Campus

For this educational series, local artists will give lectures on Thursday nights, and host a workshop on the following Friday afternoon.

The lineup is as follows:

Jacques de Beaufort, surrealist painter, October 24 and 25; Leah Brown and Peter Symons, art and new technology, November 14 and 15; Kate Kretz, fiber art, January 24 and 24, 2014; and Taylor Pilote, sculpture and kinetic art, February 20 and 21, 2014.

All lectures are 6:30 p.m. Thursdays at 1100 Coconut Creek Blvd., Pompano Beach. Workshops are 2 p.m. in building 50, room 125, at 1000 Coconut Creek Blvd., Pompano Beach. Admission is free. 

Day of the Dead

Fourth Annual Day Of The Dead Celebration

This multimedia and one-day event on Saturday, November 2, is perhaps Fort Lauderdale's quirkiest event of the year. When 7,000 or so locals flock to downtown Fort Lauderdale clad in costume gear and skeleton-inspired face paint, a flow of creative energy abounds.

In honor of the Mexican tradition, this Lauderdale happening begins at the Museum of Art at 2 p.m. with puppet shows and workshops, including a massive skeleton procession en route to downtown Fort Lauderdale. The event features mariachi music, art exhibitions, food trucks, and dancing.

Counting Backwards, Young At Art Museum's Bedlam Lorenz Assembly

This contemporary group art show, opening Saturday, November 9 concerns the world's major shifts in terms of human communication, climate change and political landscape. Participating artists Samatha Salzinger, Margi Glavovic Nothard, Andrew Nigon and Jillian Mayer will present multimedia works that will question and respond to the subversive shifts our world has undergone.

I Think It's In My Head, Girls' Club Collection

TM Sisters are a Miami artist duo and sisters at large, Monica and Natasha Lopez de Victoria. They have been featured in the New York Times for their contemporary artwork. In this show, the TM Sisters serve as curators and have chosen pieces to display from private art collectors Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz.

Selected works will consist of vivid and subtle mysteries in which viewers will have to decide: Is what I'm seeing simply in my head? Opening Sunday, November 10, and on view through September 30, 2014.

ArtHeart For Rwanda, FAT Village Arts District

Saturday, November, 16: This low-brow group art show intends to raise funds for orphans in Rwanda in partnership with ZoeHelps.org. Featuring more than 20 exhibiting artists, live music, live art and vendors, this charitable art show will offer attendees a well-rounded cultural experience.

Hot Topics Artist Series, Art And Culture Center Of Hollywood

This lecture series features leading, national contemporary visual arts players who will discuss their process, and offer a Q&A session with audiences. The first speaker was artist Wayne White on October 5. White has designed sets on the hit children's TV show, Peewee's Playhouse.

Lyle Ashton Harris, famed portrait artist, December 13; Andrea Zittel, American sculptor, February 8; and Dan Fauci, executive producer of television series Whole Day Down, April 5, 2014.
