Scott Israel Gets Fired
Former Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel has officially been removed from office. In a 25-15 vote on Wednesday, the Senate sided with Governor Ron DeSantis’ suspension of Israel’s for his response to shootings at the Fort Lauderdale International Airport and in Parkland. WLRN’s Broward County reporter Caitie Switalski has been following the story and joins Sundial to talk about Israel’s future plans.
Breast Cancer Awareness
The American Cancer Society recommends women start screening for breast cancer between the age of 40 to 44 but new research by Dr. Judith Hurley, an oncologist at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, suggests that women might have to start earlier. Bethany Reeb-Sutherland is a breast cancer survivor and the Board Co-Vice President of the local board of the Susan G. Komen in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. She was diagnosed with cancer at 37 years old. Dr. Hurley and Sutherland talk with Sundial host Luis Hernandez about their experience and ongoing research focused on treating breast cancer survivors.
Oolite Awards
Oolite Arts, which was formerly known as Art Center South Florida, announced its second annual winners of the Ellies Awards. The award celebrates artists and art teachers in South Florida with $500,000 in funding that can be used for projects around the globe. Sundial talked to this year’s winners David McCauley and Christina Petterson about their future projects.
