Miami Commissioner Ken Russell won re-election
Commissioner Ken Russell was re-elected to another four-year term in city of Miami’s District 2 race this week. He defeated opponents Jim Fried, Javier Gonzalez and Rosy Palomino. District 2 stretches mostly along the Biscayne Boulevard corridor - Southwest 40th Street to Northeast 54th Street. Russell joins Sundial to discuss his priorities after his re-election.
Amendment 4 Update
The Florida Supreme Court heard arguments on Wednesday about Amendment 4. Last November, Florida voters approved Amendment 4, which restored voting rights for people in the state convicted of felonies as long as they have completed their sentences. The main question being litigated is whether former felons should be required to pay back all of their associated court fines and fees before they can head to the ballot box. WLRN Reporter Danny Rivero joins Sundial to give an update.
Girls Scouts of Tropical Florida
In 2018, the Boy Scouts decided to drop “Boy” from its name and started welcoming older girls. This led the Girl Scouts of the United States of America to file a trademark lawsuit against the Boy Scouts of America. Local Girl Scout Kami Bumper and Girls Scouts of Tropical FloridaCEO Chelsea Wilkerson joins Sundial to share their thoughts.
“Retra-Tablos”
A new exhibit at the Coral Gables Museum features self-portraits of seventeen children from Lake Worth. The portraits are called “Retra-Tablos” and were created by student artists, ages six to twelve, from the The Guatemalan-Maya Center. Their art includes images of Mayan deities, Catholic iconography and American pop culture. The project was funded by The Ellies — a series of grants awarded to individual with special art projects in South Florida. Aurora Molina, an Ellies award recipient and the Miami-based artist behind “Retra-Tablos”, joins Sundial to discuss how the project was created.
