The Florida Roundup: Gables' Bag Ban, Football's Toll On Former Players & Haitians Fear End To TPS

Haitian and immigration advocates held a rally in front of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Miami on Saturday, May 13, 2017.

This week on The Florida Roundup...

It's official: Coral Gables is the first city in Florida to enact a ban on plastic bags. Retailers are no longer allowed to supply them or they could be fined up to $500. This is just one of the new local government prohibitions on carrying containers.

In July, Miami-Dade County's ban on polystyrene, the generic name for Styrofoam, in its parks goes into effect. Miami Beach banned it last fall. We get the details on the ordinance and how it may be challenged by state law from The Miami Herald's Lance Dixon.

Also, a member of the Dolphins' Perfect Season is speaking out against football. Former linebacker Nick Buoniconti played for the Dolphins in three Super Bowls. This week, he told Sports Illustrated he struggles with memory loss, confusion and even struggles to get dressed. He accuses the National Football League of disregard for its former players well being.

Buoniconti is not alone. Several members of that '72 season have experienced similar struggles. The concern is Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) brought on by concussions and thousands of hits to the head suffered by football players. We turn to Linda Robertson with The Miami Herald for more on Buoniconti's journey and what his story means for football and its fans.

Plus, as expiration date for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians draws closer, the Trump administration looks into the backgrounds of those immigrants to compile evidence of criminal activity. For the tens of thousands of Haitians here under the temporary protection are now facing uncertain futures.

We hear from a community advocate and TPS holder Farah Larrieux and Caribbean correspondent for The Miami Herald Jacqueline Charles.
