Victims' Mothers To Hold Vigil At Liberty City Mass Shooting Scene

Nadege Green

Hermana Richardson is returning to the Liberty City street where her son and his best friend were murdered.

It’s been three months since one of the worst mass shooting in Miami’s history. Seven people were injured. Two died.

“Three months they’ve been murdered and we haven’t heard anything yet,” says Richardson.  “They’re not talking about it anymore and I don’t want it to be thrown on a shelf.”

On June 24, in the early morning hours, two gun men carrying high-powered rifles unleashed a barrage of bullets into a crowd standing outside of a Liberty City apartment building near the notorious Pork and Beans housing projects.

The case remains unsolved.

Richardson avoided the streets near where her son died. She didn't want to remember the image of  his lifeless body lying beneath a yellow tarp.

On Wednesday, she says, she will be prepared to stand in front of the beige apartment complex. Tangela Jackson, mother of victim Nakeil Jackson, will stand next to her.

Members of the community and religious leaders will surround them.

The mothers say they don’t want their children to be forgotten. They don’t want there's to be another unsolved cold case.

“We’re going to be speaking out as mothers because we need to get some type of justice,” Richardson says.

They will plea with nearby residents and possible witnesses to cooperate with police and they will demand Miami city leaders address the larger problem of crime near the housing projects.

In the first seven months of this year, 43 people in a 13-square-block area surrounding the projects have been shot, according to a Miami Herald report. Seven have died.

Richardson and Jackson will release 24 balloons in front of the building where their sons’ succumbed to the violence on June 24.

If you go: Mass Shooting Vigil at 7:30 p.m Sept. 24, Northwest 65 Street and 12 Avenue, Miami.
