Everglades-Inspired Art

If you just can’t get enough of Florida wildlife, or if you want to celebrate increased funding for Everglades clean-up, you might want to check out this event.

Hosted at a home on Matheson Avenue, the Summer Salon on Sunday, June 30, will feature Ana Mendez, Gustavo Matamoros and works of art from the Artists in Residence in Everglades (AIRIE) collection.

Blogger Thomas Hollingsworth has details and photos on Art Lurker.

A Smarter Bridge

Ever wanted to understand the engineering and science behind bridge construction? Well, maybe not. But now that South Florida's 836/826 interchange features highways stacked on highways (with more to come,) you might just be interested.

Graduate students and professors at Florida International University are using specially designed technology to measure shrinkage and strain on concrete.

Matthew Toro has FIU’s video of how this monitoring is done at Transit Miami.

World Social Media Day Miami

The free event at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, June 30, will feature over 60 speakers. Discussions include online engagement and topics ranging from business to community service.

Laurence Anyways Opens

Laurence Anyways, a Xavier Dolan film, debuts in South Florida on Sunday, June 30, exclusively at the Miami Beach Cinematheque.

The film explores 10 years in the life of a man undergoing a sex change operation to become a woman.

Blogger Hans Morgenstern has a review at Independent Ethos: “The film is simply a brilliantly sculpted piece of cinematic drama that should be seen by cinephiles in search of something that boldly explores and exploits the cinematic medium to its limits. But there’s a brilliant, compassionate story at the center of it, too.”

Conservatives And DOMA

Blogger Javier Manjarres explores the other side of this week's U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on gay marriage.

Gov. Rick Scott said that Florida is a “traditional marriage state” and that he will “uphold the existing law of the land.”

The blogger has more reactions at the Shark Tank.
