South Florida Nurses Protest For Better Ebola Protocols

Lisann Ramos

The National Nurses United union wants Ebola to be less of a threat to nurses. Members of the union gathered at Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale Friday to take a stand for their protection.

They are circulating a petition that asks President Obama and Congress to require health facilities to improve their safety standards.

“Two of our comrades fell to this Ebola and they supposedly were wearing proper gear and given the adequate training, so somewhere something happened,” says Gillian Brown, a local nurse in National Nurses United who attended the protest.

Rose Campbell was also at the rally. She says nurses across the country shouldn’t be afraid of going to work.

“I’m fearful," she says, "but I’m going to fight for the fact that the president is going to do the right thing and protect the nurses.”

A poll conducted by the union among its members says that 85 percent of nurses surveyed don’t feel their hospitals have provided adequate training on Ebola.
