QUICK UPDATES

Thousands Of Doses Of Moderna Vaccine On The Way To Palm Beach County

Updated Monday at 6:50 a.m.

Hospitals throughout Palm Beach County expect to receive a total of 18,000 doses of the newly authorized Moderna vaccine to inoculate against COVID-19 within a week, officials said Friday.

The announcement was made the same day the Food and Drug Administration announced its authorization of the Moderna vaccine, and a week after another vaccine developed by Pfizer received approval and began initial distribution.

Unlike the Pfizer vaccine, the Moderna does not require ultra-cold storage, making it easier to store and distribute.

Renters Could Be Cast Out Of Their Homes With Eviction Moratorium Set To End Dec. 31

Updated Monday At 6:45 a.m

For hundreds of South Florida families behind on their rent, New Years Day looms not as a signal of fresh beginning and hope, but as the day their legal right to stay in their home will expire.

That’s the day the federal government’s current nationwide moratorium on evictions, issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Sept. 4, is scheduled to end. Unless it is extended as part of the long-negotiated COVID-19 relief bill still in negotiation in Congress, thousands of evictions cases piling up in South Florida courts will be allowed to proceed to their final step — removal of tenants.

Many South Florida tenants who lost income during the pandemic have already felt the sting of eviction.

As Students Head Into Winter Break, COVID Numbers Rising In Miami, Broward, Keys Schools

Updated Monday at 6:42 a.m.

The day before South Florida public school students were set to go on their two-week winter break, cases of COVID-19 among pupils and staff continue to rise.

The Florida Department of Health confirmed that 1,811 students and 830 employees have tested positive for the novel coronavirus as of Thursday. The 2,641 cases reflect the total numbers since Miami-Dade public school students and teachers returned to in-person classes on Oct. 5.

The case numbers are posted on the school district’s online COVID-19 dashboard. The number of actual cases is likely higher, however, because the Department of Health must confirm self-reported diagnoses before they are added to the ledger.
