Census: 128 Languages Spoken In South Florida Homes

U.S. Census Bureau

At least 350 languages were spoken in U.S. households between 2009 and 2013, the U.S. Census Bureau reported Tuesday.

It is one of the most comprehensive data ever collected by the Census' American Community Survey. ACS previously had only 39 language groups available to classify its data annually.

In the Miami metropolitan area – Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties – 128 languages are spoken at home.

The survey is divided into two major groups: English-only speakers and speakers of a language other than English.

Out of the Miami metro area's 2.7 million bilingual or multilingual speakers, close to half identified themselves as speaking English “Less than very well."

Some languages identified by the Census here besides English and Spanish are French, French Creole, Portuguese, Russian, Tagalog, Hebrew and German.

There are 150 different Native North American languages among those listed in the report, including Cherokee, Dakota and Apache.

The study also details some languages not as widely spoken across the United States, like Pennsylvania Dutch, Turkish, Romanian and Ahmaric.
