But What About My Pets? These Emergency Shelters in South Florida Will Take Them

Hurricane preparedness goes beyond boarding windows and stocking up on water. Should an evacuation be necessary, many South Florida residents have not only themselves, but their furry friends to worry about as well.

The Red Cross runs a shelter in Broward County available for residents with pets living in the evacuation zone or any mobile home in the county. The county shelter at the Millennium Middle School / Challenger Elementary School Campus (5803 NW 94th Ave., Tamarac, FL) admits pets whose owners can be housed at the shelter next door. Other Broward County shelter locations can be found online.

Similarly, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade and Monroecounties offer emergency pet shelters for residents. However, pre-registration is required.

In addition to pet registration, owners must provide proof of county residence, as well as the pet's vaccination and medical records. Calling ahead is recommended.
