Voters Approve Property Tax To Give Broward Teachers Six Percent Raise

Sun Sentinel
Teacher raises are still to be determined by negotiations with their union.

Broward voters put aside their concerns about school district financial management and approved a new property tax earmarked for teachers, school security officers and student mental health care.

The tax is expected to raise $93 million a year, most of which will be used to give teachers a 6 percent raise. The higher pay will last for four years and would have to be renewed by voters in 2022 to continue.

Parkland resident Leon Fooksman said he voted in favor, although he had reservations.

“I didn’t vote for it enthusiastically,” said Fooksman, who has two sons in Broward schools. “We already pay a high price in my mind. But I want to make sure my kids have satisfied teachers. We already pay a lot for security, so if it takes a little more, that’s what it’s got to be. And factoring in mental health care, that’s a no-brainer.”
