Photo Gallery: The Night Zombies Take Over Key West

It's the one night of the year when zombies take over the streets of Key West. Thousands of zombies. On bikes.

The Zombie Bike Ride has been around less than a decade but has quickly grown into one of the locals' favorite Fantasy Fest events, a remarkably family-friendly cap to the first weekend of the 10-day festival of parties, parades, costume contests and general decadence.

Zombie is interpreted widely and creatively, from elegant to gory. All zombies are welcome. There are child zombies and dog zombies. Clown zombies and dragon zombies.

The ride starts at the historic East Martello fort near Key West International Airport and rides along the island's Atlantic shore and winds up where most Key West gatherings do — on Duval Street. There, zombies reign until the wee hours — and have even been spotted the morning after, still staggering in search of brains and other sustenance.
