About a dozen people were detained in Pompano Beach after a boat carrying migrants tried to bring them ashore, the Broward Sheriff's Office said Thursday morning.

POMPANO BEACH — Fourteen migrants were arrested after a boat crashed in the seawall in Pompano Beach on Thursday morning, authorities said.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Southeast 28th Avenue and Atlantic Boulevard in the Intracoastal Waterway about 8:45 a.m. Thursday.

At least one person jumped in the water and others attempted to flee, according to one witness. The country of origin for those detained was not immediately provided by authorities, but one of the migrants told WPLG-Ch. 10 that they were fleeing violence in Jamaica.
