Brightline was deadly even before the trains officially started operating in early 2018. Three people were hit and killed on the tracks as the company was preparing to launch, including an 18-year-old who died by suicide. During those early days, the promise of a private passenger train connecting South Florida’s cities was tempered by the reality: People were going to keep dying on the tracks unless someone did something about it.
