Local Leaders Want To Change Dixie Highway's Name. What Would You Call It Instead?

The University Metrorail Station pedestrian bridge over South Dixie Highway. Local leaders are pushing to rename the road.

Dixie Highway, one of the oldest roadways in the country that's associated with former Confederate states, is under consideration for renaming by Miami-Dade.

The current name comes from the Mason-Dixon line, which separated slave-owned states from free-soil states in the north during the late 18th century.

The roadway's name didn't capture the attention of Miami-Dade leaders in 2017 when officials across the U.S. removed memorials in Louisiana, Maryland and Virginia.

Miami-Dade commissioners have recently introduced legislation to rename the highway.

South Dixie Highway runs along U.S. 1 from Southwest Miami to upper Monroe County. West Dixie Highway winds through Northeast Miami-Dade. A stretch called East Dixie Highway runs from Northeast 82nd to 87th streets in Northeast Miami.

Do you think the name should change? What would you call it instead? Respond in our form below. We may use part of your response in a future story.

The deadline to respond is 6 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3.
