Republican State Senator for District 39 Anitere Flores is pushing forward new legislation to better regulate surgical centers. She filed a 42-page bill after a USA Today investigation examined the unregulated field of plastic surgery centers in South Florida clinics and found two clinics responsible for 8 deaths over the past 6 years. Senator Flores joined Sundial to talk about the bill, her views on Gov. Ron DeSantis' proposed $91.3 billion state budget and her priorities for the upcoming legislative.
A new report has found that the seagrass die-off in Biscayne Bay continues at alarming rates. Pollution and climate change are on the top list of culprits for this phenomenon, that could have serious implications for the region’s ecosystem. Miami-Dade County commissioners agreed earlier this month to create a task force to tackle Biscayne Bay pollution. Lee Hefty, assistant director for Miami Dade County’s Environmental Regulation Department, joined Sundial to talk about the report and possible solutions policymakers could implement.
The new documentary film “The Last Resort” brings to life famous American photographer Andy Sweet’s images of Miami Beach’s Jewish community in the late 1970s. The film was inspired by the book “ Shtetl in the Sun: Andy Sweet's South Beach 1977–1980,” which was edited by journalist Brett Sokol and features unseen photographs from Sweet. Brett Sokol and Dennis Scholl joined Sundial to talk about the release of the film and Andy Sweet’s legacy.
What does it mean to be a Miamian? A collection of micro-theater plays titled "I Am Miami," seeks to answer that question. The plays are based on real interviews with 60 Miami residents conducted by the play's director Lucia Miranda who flew into South Florida from Spain to participate in the project. The production takes place in shipping containers and Miranda joined Sundial to explain her inspiration for the project and the experience of the Miami micro-theater.
