weather forecast

More than four million Floridians are likely to experience a freeze over the next two nights, including rural areas of Southwest Florida by Wednesday morning. The cold spell follows a week of abnormal warmth in the Sunshine State, when more than a dozen record highs were tied or broken.

President Trump continues to defend his now four-day old assertion that Alabama was once in the projected path of Hurricane Dorian. In a new tweet Thursday morning, the President insisted "Alabama was going to be hit or grazed, and then Hurricane Dorian took a different path." The President then lashed out at the news media saying "The Fake News knows this very well. That's why they're the Fake News!"

Heavy rain and potential flooding is in the forecast this week across parts of Florida, and a tropical storm might even form nearby.

Regardless of its tropical status, several inches of rain are likely to fall near Florida’s Gulf Coast this week. Nearby seas will also grow unsettled, with minor coastal flooding and multiple beach hazards expected.

As Michael churned toward the coast last October, forecasters feared the compact hurricane would blossom into a fierce storm far worse than their projections.

But what they weren't able to predict were Michael's three rapid explosions of power that ultimately made it the first Cat 5 hurricane to make landfall since 1992's lethal Hurricane Andrew and one of only four to ever hit the U.S. While track forecasts have vastly improved, predicting intensity remains a challenge.

Thursday Afternoon Update

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for much of southeast Florida, including Miami and West Palm Beach, until 9 pm. This replaces the Tornado Watch that was issued for central and southwest Florida earlier in the day.  The risk of wind damage will continue through early evening in the watch area, thanks to an approaching line of thunderstorms.

Gordon may be gone, but there's no doubt the heart of hurricane season is here. Florence is a potential hurricane threat to the Mid-Atlantic states next week, and two other tropical waves are likely to develop behind it this weekend. One, in particular, could - emphasis on the word “could” - be a concern to Florida in about ten days.
