Florida continues to count votes for the 2018 midterm election. Today Sundial took a look at the historical context behind the ongoing recount in three key races in Florida. Retired political science professor at the University of South Florida Dr. Susan MacManus joined the show to talk about what the recount could mean for the 2020 election.

Former WLRN education reporter Rowan Moore Gerety traveled to the southern African nation of Mozambique in 2011 as a Fulbright Scholar, a cultural exchange program for early-career professionals. There he found Bawa, a town of about 1,000 where concerns include securing clean water and staying safe from crocodiles. Moore Gerety’s book “Go Tell The Crocodiles: Chasing Prosperity in Mozambique” is about the complex challenges facing residents in Mozambique's countryside and the questionable “solutions” those in leadership provided to residents. He joined Sundial to talk about his book; he'll be at the Miami Book Fair on Sunday, Nov. 18.

The play “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” shook off-Broadway audiences two decades ago with its progressive take on human sexuality, relationships and rock’n’roll. It follows the story of Hedwig, an East German immigrant who got a sex change, moved to the United States, started a rock music career and had his lyrics stolen by his former lover Tommy Gnosis. The play is currently being performed at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and the lead is Dominique Scott, a New World School of the Arts graduate. Scott joined Sundial to explain how he got into character for the role and why this show continues to resonate with audiences years later.

Back in April, Sundial interviewed Colombian rock star musician Juanes before his Miami performance at the American Airlines Arena. The 2018 Latin GRAMMYs Awards are tomorrow and and Juanes has been nominated for best “Short Form Music Video” for his song “Pa Dentro.” Juanes talked about the evolution of his music and his 2017 album.
