Viva Mango!

Viva Mango

Viva Mango is WLRN TV’s new documentary that shares   captivating stories of people and animals who are passionate and even obsessed about mangos.  It highlights those who lead respectable lives but steal mangos on the side, including a realtor who takes mangos from the houses she sells; and even some who live off mangos or have risked their lives for mangos. Renowned explorers and scientists, chefs, presidents of countries and everyday people are among the people whose lives have been affected by this fruit.

Interviews include: Richard Campbell and Noris Ledesma, mango experts at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden which held its 20th Annual Mango Festival in 2012; Larry Schokman, Director Emeritus for The Kampong; and renowned Chef Norman Van Aken, who prepares a dish with one of his favorite ingredients…mango!

Grown in tropical and subtropical climates, the mangifera indica is a bonding force and a common cultural denominator for many of the natives, immigrants and residents of South Florida. The mango may be exotic to other parts of the country, but it’s a constant presence and backyard staple for many who live in this community.

Viva Mango airs on WLRN TV Channel 17 on Wednesday, July 10 at 8 p.m.
