A Missouri-based nonprofit studying trends in entrepreneurial activity ranked the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area No. 2 on its list for startup business activity.

The Kauffman Foundation's annual report ranks 40 metropolitan areas based on their startup activity.

This year, Austin, Texas ranked No. 1. The top 10 list included San Jose, Calif.; Los Angeles; Denver, Colo.; San Francisco; New York; Houston; San Diego, Calif.; and San Antonio, Texas.

Kauffman’s data includes all industries – anything from high-growth ones to mom-and-pop companies.

Florida ranked ninth overall in state trends. Orlando moved down to No. 33, 12 places from last year, and Tampa Bay fell five places to No. 20.

The five states that ranked at the top of Kauffman’s index were Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, Colorado and Vermont.

The metro and state study follows a national report by Kauffman released last month showing that Latinos and immigrants are fueling an uptick in new business creation nationwide.

Whether immigrant-rich South Florida follows this trend is unknown. Those numbers are not available on a metro level.

Kauffman’s researchers are teaming up with the U.S. Census Bureau to break out that sort of demographic data. Those reports will debut next year.
