Brickell Development Promises A More Walkable Downtown

A massive new mixed-use development in Brickell is nearing completion and promises an improved downtown pedestrian experience. Brickell City Centre, a 5.4-million-square-foot complex, includes luxury condos, office space, hotels and a shopping center.

The development is fully funded by the Hong Kong-based Swire Group, which has taken an innovative approach to access, including an already completed underground parking structure which stretches for five city blocks.

Swire also renovated the Metro Mover Eighth Street Station, and will maintain the station and surroundings as part of a novel 99-year agreement with local government.

The emphasis on access translates into more walkable amenities. For example, Brickell City Centre’s platform design allows pedestrians to walk from condo to shopping center to office building without crossing the street below. A steel-and-glass “climate ribbon” covers the concourse, keeping it cool and protecting from rain.

One of the condo buildings has already opened and the first shops in the retail center are set to do the same in the fall, but the improved downtown experience Brickell City Centre promises has already raised real estate values nearby.
