Demolition crews on Tuesday began razing a Plantation shopping center section that exploded in July due to a gas leak.
The blast injured 22 people and obliterated a defunct pizza shop at the north end of the Market on University, 1041 S. University Drive. State officials attributed the explosion to a gas valve that had been turned on a few hours earlier at Pizzafire, a tenant that had left the property in December.
Demolition is expected to take at least two weeks, according to EDENS, owner of the shopping center. The developer plans to raze the strip that backs on to Southwest 10th Street and construct new shops.
