Former Trainer Opens Fire At Coral Gables Gym, Killing Two Employees Then Himself

Apr 8, 2017

A gunman opened fire near the tony Equinox fitness center at the Village of Merrick Park in Coral Gables Saturday, killing two former co-workers before killing himself, police sources said.

Merrick Park Equinox general manager Janine Ackerman, shot in the head, died Saturday. Gunman Abeku Wilson, fired earlier Saturday, then killed himself in another part of the gym, as reported Saturday and confirmed Sunday morning by Miami-Dade police.

"Our entire Equinox family experienced a terrible tragedy yesterday when a former trainer walked into our club in Coral Gables and shot two members of our team," read an email from Equinox sent to gym members Sunday morning. "We are deeply saddened to inform you that our General Manager, Janine Ackerman, and our Fitness Manager, Mario Hortis, both passed away as a result of their injuries. Our sense of loss is too profound for words."

Jesus Reyes, a currency analyst who trains regularly at Equinox, said he was taking a shower there after his workout Saturday when he heard the gunshots.

"The first sounded like it might have been something heavy that had just dropped, and then I heard three or four more - that was distinct - and I grabbed my towel," said Reyes, who was standing barefoot outside the gym after scrounging some sweat pants and a T-shirt to wear.

"That's when I saw people running as fast as they could out through a service exit tthat leads to one of the back alleys."
