Last year, the city of Miami passed an “inclusionary zoning” measure that would require a portion of the apartments in Miami’s Omni district, north of downtown, to be made affordable for residents. Commissioner Ken Russell spearheaded the project. He joined Sundial to talk about affordable housing in South Florida and also update us on future plans for the Coconut Grove Playhouse, which will be the topic of discussion at next week’s city of Miami commission meeting.
As candidates gear up for the upcoming 2020 presidential election, many are wondering how candidates will engage with thefastest growing population in the U.S.: Latinos. Fernand Amandi, a Democratic pollster in Miami and host of the podcast “Strange Days with Fernand Amandi,” and Bruno Barreiro, state committeeman for the Republican party of Florida representing Miami-Dade County, joined Sundial to talk about how each party is preparing for the upcoming election.
Friends of the Everglades, an organization that pushes to protect, preserve and restore the Everglades, just celebrated its 50th year of advocacy. The organization was started by famous writer and South Florida nature-advocate Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Connie Washburn sits on the Board of Directors for the nonprofit and talked to reporter Caitie Switalski about 50 years of fighting for the Everglades.
