Commission Chairman Esteban Bovo, Miami-Dade College Cybersecurity Center & The Umbrella Sky Project

Alejandra Martinez
The Coral Gables Umbrella Sky Project went up in early July, making Giralda Avenue Miami's newest tourist attraction.

Esteban Bovo is the Chairman of the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners. Before being elected chairman in 2016 he served as a Miami-Dade County Commissioner representing District 13, which includes Hialeah, Miami Lakes and Palm Springs North. Chairman Bovo, a Republican, was recently named the Chair of the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, which oversees Tri-Rail. He believes Miami should invest in buses with the intention of developing rail in the near future.

Jorge Ortega is the Director of Miami Dade College's brand new CyberSecurity Center of the Americas. Ortega previously oversaw security at Intel. The Cybersecurity Center launches this fall with a focus on training the next generation of security professionals. The school has a state of the art control room that will simulate a real-world security operations center. Ortega joined Sundial to discuss cybersecurity and how students are being prepared to address challenges.

Colorful umbrellas are blowing up social media feeds in Miami. The Coral Gables Umbrella Sky Project went up in early July, turning Giralda Plaza into Miami’s newest tourist attraction. The project was installed by a creative agency based in Portugal called SextaFeira and was intended to bring in more foot traffic to the area. Now city officials say the umbrellas have brought new customers and profits. But some are questioning why the city spent over $80,000 to bring art by a Portugal-based company instead of supporting local artists. And others are worried about what comes next, once the umbrellas leave. The Mayor of the city of Coral Gables, Raul Valdes-Fauli, joined Sundial to talk about public art and the new Umbrella Sky Project.
